FREMONT, CA: In past few years, there has been a consolidated initiative to nail down precise definitions of Third-Party Logistics (3PL) and Fourth-Party Logistics (4PL). Conceptually, they evolved roughly a few decades apart, during the 1970s and the 1990s, respectively. Their definitions have since become slightly blurred as competing providers have sometimes implemented the terms differently. Many in the shipping sector, to say nothing of their customers across the global supply chain, have sometimes battled to differentiate between 3PL vs 4PL logistics. Here's what one needs to know to better understand the differences between 3PL and 4PL providers and decide which one is right.

Knowing the differences between 3PL and 4PL logistics is a vital first step toward deciding which would better streamline the business's supply chain management. The term 3PL was initially leveraged to describe intermodal marketing firms(IMCs) in transportation contracts — literal third parties in the 1970s when contracts for the transportation of goods usually only involved a shipper and a carrier. At the time, an IMC that was a 3PL merely accepted shipments from a customer and assisted in tender those goods to an established rail carrier.

3PL providers have widened their purview and include several kinds of companies providing various logistics services: transportation, warehousing, cross-docking, inventory management, freight forwarding, packaging, courier services, or bundled suites of services coupling these. Today, the accepted definition of a 3PL provider is a subcontractor in these logistics and transportation services.

A 4PL provider is an entity established as part of a long-term contract between one customer, which acts as a single interface between that customer and several logistics service providers. Unlike a 3PL, a 4PL is ideally expected to handle all aspects of its customer's supply chain. In some cases, a 3PL will incorporate a novel entity capable of acting as a 4PL or merely form a 4PL within its existing structure: structural variations and legal subtleties that have made the 3PL and 4PL distinction hard for observers parse.
